Vascular endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs), the precursors of endothelial cells, specifically express CD34, CD133 and VEGFR-2 and have the potential to differentiate into vascular endothelial cells. EPCs are mainly located in bone marrow and peripheral blood. Tumor growth and metastasis depend on tumor angiogenesis. Tumor cells can synthesize and release a variety of cytokines. Under the chemotactic effect of different factors, EPCs mobilize from the bone marrow to the peripheral blood circulation, and then migrate and colonize into the tumor tissue, differentiate into mature endothelial cells by cytokines and participate in tumor angiogenesis. The VEGF / VEGFR-2 signaling pathway plays an important role in tumor angiogenesis in which EPCs are involved.
