A record number of visitors went to the Shanghai Expo, which officially closed on Sunday.
With a few words, Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao declared the end of the Shanghai Expo.
Jean Pierre Lafon, the President of the International Exhibitions Bureau, the organization that oversees the world expos, called the Shanghai Expo a complete success. He delighted the audience at the closing ceremony by making his comments in Chinese.
Lafon says the Expo is also Chinas success.
The Chinese government says 73 million visitors came to the Shanghai Expo, a recordbreaking number.
Sixmonth public exhibition included pavilions showing different countries and international organizations. The variety of cultures and technologies on display were aimed at illustrating different ideas for urban sustainability (持续性).
Most of the visitors were Chinese, many from the countryside, and for many it was a onceinalifetime chance to directly see foreign places and people.
At a ceremony earlier in the day, Premier Wen praised the fair as a "splendid event".
Wen called the Expo a "severe test" for China and for Shanghai. He pointed out that this is the first Expo held by a developing country, and that it took place under the shadow of the international financial crisis.
U.N. Secretary General Ban KiMoon, who also spoke at the Expo event, praised it for promoting international understanding.
"At this great world fair, China has brought nations together, celebrated global diversity, inspired the world with achievements of architectural design, rich intellectual exhibitions and a rich multicultural mixture of visitors," he said.
China spent billions of dollars on the event, and many billions more to improve transportation and other public facilities in Shanghai.
Some residents were forced out of their old housing to make way for the expo, which took up a nearly sixsquarekilometer area along Shanghais Huangpu River. All but a few of the more than 200 structures built for the Shanghai Expo will be taken apart and recycled or disposed of otherwise. Some pavilions will be moved else where to serve as museums or landmarks.
The first World Exposition was in London in 1851, which marked the coming Industrial Revolution. The next two upcoming expos are in the South Korean port city of Yeosu in 2012, and the Italian city of Milan, in 2015.
1.According to Premier Wen Jiabao, the Shanghai Expo .
A.promoted international understanding of China
B.illustrated the different ideas for urban sustainability
C.stood the severe test and proved to be a great hit
D.inspired the world with the achievement of architectural design
2.We can conclude from the passage that .
A.the Shanghai Expo had a greater number of foreign visitors than any ever expo
B.some pavilions for the Shanghai Expo were constructed with environmentally friendly materials
C.the theme of the first World Exposition in London was the Industrial Revolution
D.China is the first country in Asia to hold the World Exposition successfully
3.According to the passage, which of the following statements show the significance of the Shanghai Expo?
a.It improved the citys transportation and other public facilities.
b.It promoted world communication and multicultural mixture.
c.It attracted more foreign investment and international trade.
d.It contributed to the citys construction and development.
e.It helped the world out of the financial crisis.
A.a, b, d B.a, b, c
C.b, c, eD.a, b, e
4.Which of the following might be the best title of the passage?
A.The closing ceremony of the Shanghai Expo.
B.The general view of the World Exposition.
C.The severe test of Chinese people.
D.The complete success of the Shanghai Expo.

Life in space is about to get a little spacier! The International Space Station is getting a major improvement. The space shuttle Endeavour recently delivered two bedrooms, a mini kitchen, and a bathroom to the space laboratory.
Thats a lot more floating room for the three astronauts who live on board. Currently, the space station has three bedrooms and one bathroom. The new rooms will add enough space for six astronauts to live there at once. NASA officials hope to send up the additional residents in May or June.
Having more astronauts in space will let scientists gather data about the solar system more quickly. Space station residents currently spend about 10 hours a week doing experiments on health and safety issues. With six people on board, that study time could jump to 35 hours a week. “Some people need to focus on keeping the station running,” Kylie Clem, a spokesperson for NASA, told WR News. “With more people on board, more people will be able to focus on the science experiments.”
Adding more astronauts will require more than just extra room. The space station will also need special technology to support more people.
One of the gadgets arrived on the Endeavour. It is a new system that will turn the astronauts urine into drinking water. That might sound unpleasant, but recycling, or reusing, the liquid will make sure the space station has enough water for the astronauts. Right now, water has to be rocketed to the space station from the Earth.
“Its going to take yesterdays coffee and make it into todays coffee,” astronaut Donnald Pettit joked about the machine.
NASA officials plan to do extensive, or broad, testing to make sure the system works before astronauts use it. The Endeavours crew brought samples back to Earth for analysis, or examination.
The space station may have gotten a space lift, but work on the floating lab isnt done yet. NASA and other space agencies plan to add more to the massive, or huge, structure. The space station is expected to be finished by 2011.
All the work will be worth it, Clem says.“Were learning what it takes to live and work in space…We can use that on our missions going…to Mars.”
Astronauts float in space. Thats because there is no gravity there. Gravity is a force that pulls you toward Earth. Floating can be fun, but its a little tricky when an astronaut wants to eat, sleep, or exercise. Here is what they do.
•Eating
Astronauts dont have to float after oranges if they dont want to. Footholds let them stay seated at a table, and their food containers are attached to a tray with Velcro(尼龙搭扣).
•Sleeping
You may sleep lying down, but astronauts sleep standing up! Astronauts zip themselves into sleeping bags on the wall before a snooze(打盹).
•Exercising
Exercise is a must! Astronauts bones can become weak in space, so space station residents fasten themselves to a running machine and an exercise bike for daily workouts.
1.What is the main idea of the passage?
A.The International Space Station is getting supersized.
B.The International Space Station is thirsty for special technology.
C.Astronauts will live a new life in the International Space Station.
D.More astronauts will be working in the International Space Station.
2.According to the passage, more astronauts will be sent into the Station so that .
A.scientists will be able to gather more accurate data
B.scientists will pay more attention to their health and safety issues
C.more people will be able to conduct the science experiments
D.more people will focus on improving the floating lab conditions
3.The biggest challenge of having more astronauts in space is .
A.the need of special technology to provide more space
B.the lack of enough drinking water for all the astronauts in the station
C.the development of special equipment to send drinking water to the station
D.the testing of the system for recycling water in the space station
4.It can be inferred from the passage that in the writers opinion, .
A.astronauts need certain equipment to help them when eating
B.astronauts sleep lying down in bags on the wall
C.astronauts have to take exercise every day to fit in with the space conditions
D.life in the space station is interesting but a little difficult
