饱和砂土液化通常是结构严重破坏而导致生命和财产损失的主要原因。如果基底土是易于在地震时液化的,那么加固上部结构的强度,在地震时也不会有任何帮助。这种情况在1964年新泻地震和更早些时的1934年Nepal Bihar地震时已被充分证明。
Saturated sand liquefaction is often the major cause of structurally damaging life and property damage. If the base soil is prone to liquefaction during an earthquake, the strength of the superstructure will not help in an earthquake. This situation has been well documented in the 1964 Niigata earthquake and the earlier 1936 Nepal Bihar earthquake.
