柠条为豆科多年生丛生灌木。它具有适应性强,耐寒、耐旱、耐瘠薄,根系发达,萌生力强,能盘结土壤,保持水土,固定流沙,改造地力,防护农田的优良特性,是我省黄土丘陵沟壑区和风沙区造林的主要灌木树种。我县地处晋西北黄土丘陵沟壑区。海拔800—1600米;风大沙多,十年九旱,无霜期130—150天;土壤瘠薄,土质沙松,水土流失严重。过去,这里是常年流沙滚滚,风沙蔽日,大部分耕地被沙蚀,粮食平均亩产仅20—30斤。从1955年开始,我们在河北省西部进行沙荒造林的启示下,为了防风固沙和改造沙区,首先在全县风沙蚀严重的沙畔大队,采取带网播种造林的方法,在6000余亩的沙荒地上,采用带宽2米,带间距离20—30米,大量播种了柠条,改变了恶劣的风沙环境,取得了防风固沙的良好效果。
