奴儿干都司是明王朝为管理辽东都司以北的少数民族控制地所建立的行政组织。始于永乐七年,废止于宣德十年。在此期间,由于政治局势的不同,其先后担负起不同的使命,行使不同的职能,在建立之初有护卫京师、支援讨伐蒙古、招抚等职能,其后因明廷的民族政策而行使了护卫朝贡等特殊职能,为明朝统治东北起到了不可估量的作用。
