This article examines the impact of the increasing integration of Brazil’s economy with the world economy on domestic migration in Brazil. We analyze the impact of regional differences in meeting foreign demand on the two-way migration of specific industries between the Brazilian states from 1995 to 2003. Using international trade data, we calculated the degree of foreign market access at the sectoral level, which is exogenous to domestic migration. Higher foreign market access is associated with higher local labor demand and attracts workers through two potential channels: higher wages and new job opportunities.
