20世纪初的新文化运动和20世纪中叶的抗日战争期间,我国的文化经历了大的转型。孙犁的抗战小说就是那个时代文化转型的缩影。孙犁在小学时期就受到了五四新文学的影响,后来又深受鲁迅、沈从文以及屠格涅夫浪漫主义色彩的影响,所以这样特殊时期也造就了孙犁特殊的文笔。对善良和美好事物的表现是孙犁创作的基本原则,在这种原则上创造出来的作品大都展现了孙犁抗小说的中和之美。所以孙犁抗日小说的具有独到清新的乡土气息但同时又不缺乏西方的浪漫主义色彩,更有一股淡雅脱俗的古典美。这样的抗日小说完美而深刻地展现了当时的革命历史!
