The difficulty with reading this work is that although there are many narrative voices in the work, the narrative is indefinite because the subject is to explore one’s inner world and the author does not provide sufficient information about the extremely rich innermost . This uncertainty shows the wavering of the rational understanding of human beings and reflects Conrad’s destruction of the ideal of a healthy and rational person after the Enlightenment.
