Objective To detect the level of serum uric acid (SUA) in patients with multiple sclerosis (MS) and to explore its relationship with the activity of the disease. Methods After MS patients were treated with high dose methylprednisolone, SUA levels in 54 patients with MS and 49 patients with noninflammatory neurological diseases (NIND) were determined by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Results The SUA level of MS patients was significantly lower than that of male patients (P <0.05). The SUA level of MS patients had no significant relationship with age (P> 0.05). The level of SUA in MS patients during acute phase was significantly lower than that in remission and NIND control groups (P <0.05). After treatment, the lesion was significantly reduced with the recovery of SUA level. CONCLUSION: SUA levels in MS patients are low, and are closely related to gender. Age-related changes in SUA levels are associated with changes in patients with MS. SUA may be one of the markers of MS activity.
