荷兰在国际上通用的国名是Netherlands,中译名为荷兰。而Holland一词实际上仅指西部沿海地区,因地势低洼而得名,该地区虽不及全国面积的1/3,却是政治、经济、文化中心。尽管如此,如果你跟荷兰人谈及他的国家时用“Holland”,他会有点怏快的,最好用“Netherlands”。这就好比老外与中国人谈中国时,只知北京、上海,而无视大西北、大西南的存在一样令你不快。
