In the Spring & Autumn Period, there was a hermit by the name Lao Laizi in the state of Chu. This man was very kind to his parents and took care of every whim of them to keep them happy.
In order to keep his parents living a happy life, Lao Laizi purposely raised several birds with beautiful feather and melodic sounds as the pets for their patents. He often played with these birds, inducing them to sing melodically. Every time his parents heard the sounds, they would said smilingly that “the birds’ sounds are so good”. Seeing the smile on his parents’ faces, Lao Laizi was very happy too.
Lao Laizi was actually not a young man as he was 70 years old. One day, his parents saw his white hairs and said emotionally, “our son has become that old. We don’t have many days in the world.”
Lao Laizi was afraid to make his parents worry too much about his ageing. Therefore, he tailored a colorful garment and kept dancing while working. This successfully entertained his parents and made them laugh happily again.
One day, Lao Laizi tumbled in the hall of his home. He did not want to see his parents’ sadness to see his fall. So he purposely wailed like baby and rolled about on the ground. His parents really believed that he stumbled on purpose to entertain them. They said laughingly, “it is so funny, my son. Now please get up.”
The Lord of Chu heard of Lao Laizi’s great filial piety and invited him serve the court as a governmental official. However, Lao Laizi rejected the Lord’s offer and moved to a more remote place with his family.
