2001年1月27日,农历正月初四。当人们还沉浸在合家团圆、走亲访友的节日气氛中时,我国著名的核物理学家、中科院院士教授杨福家却从上海启程,赴英国诺丁汉大学就任第五任校长。著名的诺丁汉大学聘请我国科学家担任校长,这在中、英历史上都是第一次,在中国教育史上也划上了跨时代的一笔。该校称,校务委员会之所以推荐杨福家教授担任这一职务,是因为他是一位杰出的院士,在其擅长的学科领域享有国际声誉。而杨教授却认为,应聘出任校长一职远非他个人的荣誉。他说,过去西方人总认为中国落后,甚至看不起中国人,但是现在他们能请一个中国人去担任原来只有王室和有爵位的人才能担任的职务,说明中国科技力量、中国国力的日益强大。他表示将在任期内为中英两国的教育科技交流发挥积极的作用。杨福家1936年6月11日出生于上海,原籍浙江镇海。1958年毕业于复旦大学物理系,历任复旦大学原子核科学系主任、
