The International Atomic Energy Agency is one of the seventeen specialized agencies of the United Nations. It was established in October 1957 and is headquartered in Vienna. It has 111 existing members and the current Director-General is Swedes Hans Blix. The “institution” aims to “try to accelerate and expand the contribution of atomic energy to world peace, human health and social prosperity.” Its main activities can be summarized as “promoting the peaceful use of atomic energy” and “safeguarding the supervision of recipient countries not to include atomic energy.
