Ninety-five percent of the total chromium ore concentrate produced in the USSR is derived from processing ore at the Kennels deposit at the beneficiation plant at the Don Mine Mining and Dressing Complex, which is unique in reserves and composition. It is well known that the quality of a concentrate is evaluated on the basis of the grade of the useful component (Cr 2 O 3), while the overall benefit of the concentrator is based on the recovery of the useful components in the concentrate. In 1983, 1984 and 1985, the recoveries of Cr 2 O 3 in the concentrate were 78.6%, 76.6% and 80.1%, respectively. Obviously, judging from the actual results of these three years, 20-23% of the total amount of the useful components shipped to the concentrator with the ore is irrevocably lost as the tailings is thrown into the waste rock field. By reducing the loss of useful components by 1%, it means that the Don River Mining and Dressing Consortium can keep the same amount of ore every year
