棉子内含有18%以上的油分和20%以上的蛋白质,但由于一般棉子中含有棉毒素(棉酚)而使棉油的外观及食用价值不高,未脱毒的棉仁饼或棉子饼则只能作为反刍动物饲料或直接沤肥。棉花选种工作者培育出了无棉毒素品种,使棉花成为“棉、油、粮”三位一体的经济作物;然而第一个或随后转育成的若干个无棉毒素品种并非尽善尽美的。目前国内外尚无特早熟的无棉毒素品种可供特早熟棉区直接利用,或黄河流域棉区的麦茬直播,为此我们从1976年开始了这项工作。
