When Germany faced reunification in 1990, the Bonn administration did not think it would have much of a problem to integrate the former German Democratic Republic into the political and economic structure in West Germany. The implementation of a monetary union on July 1, 1990, to replace the non-convertible East German currency with the West Demag, is considered to be an essential element of the economic recovery in East Germany.
