位于粤西的黑石顶保护区,地处南亚热带北缘。地形起伏大,属低山山地地貌。一般海拔高度为150米至700米,主峰黑石顶高达927米。东南高而西北低,溪流众多。年降雨量1743.8毫米,降雨集中在夏半年(4～9月),占全年的79%;相对湿度在80%以上。高等植物约1500余种。1986～87年作者等进行了调查采集,共整理鉴定了189种,隶属于35科,102属,其中可供食用的有32种,可供药用的23种。它们是:Auricularia polytricha(Mont.)Sacc.毛木耳(食、药)Dacryopinax spathularia(Schw.)Mart.桂花耳(食)
