Species-specific epitopes on mammalian sperm and egg surfaces may play important roles in sperm-egg recognition. Gametes antigen also found in the occurrence of race in the antigen epitopes. For example, mammalian sperm acrosomal proteins are essential for sperm to penetrate the zona pellucida and cross-react in different species. There is a variety of evidence that the antigenic structures necessary for basic life processes are preserved during evolution. Thus, antigenic determinants with germline variation and localized distribution are important clues to understanding the basic steps in fertility and also provide some information about the extent to which sperm molecular structures are conserved during evolution
