The region, which accounts for more than half of the world’s population, will be the largest market for wireless personal communications in the world. At present, the wireless personal communications market in the Asia Pacific region has been developing slowly due to government regulations and the incompatibility of communications systems. If these problems are solved, there will be tremendous opportunities for hardware manufacturers and service providers. According to the US EMCI Industrial Consultants Group predicts that by the year 2000, there will be 78 million cellular subscribers in the Asia Pacific region. According to the “Market Commentary and Forecast” released by the Multimedia Communications Association, cellular phones are growing at an average annual rate of 60% in countries with mature mobile communications markets such as Japan, Australia and Singapore. According to the Multimedia Communications Association (MTA) Telephone calls within the region now account for nearly 55% of all communications in Asia and the Pacific, equivalent to the total volume of communications in the EC. China’s international telephone traffic is rapidly expanding at an annual rate of over 50%.
