Applying the optimal control method directly to the design of a full-band autopilot results in additional control instrumentation for the control system that is constructed and is sensitive to changes in the high-frequency model. This article presents a design approach that uses classical control theory to define high-frequency designs and modern control theory to achieve optimal low-frequency performance. The paper presents the results obtained from an autopilot with an independent rolling gesture to illustrate the benefits of the combination of classical control theory with modern control theory.
