In the future, people will no longer buy audio cassettes and CDs at audiovisual stores. Instead, they buy a blank memory card and then import music from their computers. Put this memory card into the player, you can play music. The size and weight of the player is only a fraction of the current tape players or CD players. Japan’s NEC recently used a new audio technology in the lab to create a prototype that will give people a glimpse into the future of music players. The device uses the MPEG digital animation standard to compress 24-minute music into a 32 megabyte flash memory card.
