受魏晋玄学思潮的影响,“自然”成为钟嵘《诗品》所自觉追求的目标。在《诗品》中“自然”与山水景物之间构成“道”与“器”的相依关系,前者代表了最高的本性,是诗歌的理想状态,而后者则为诗歌达到这一状态提供了现实对象。正是千变万化、姿态各异的山水景物为“自然”这一存在方式提供了具体可感的现实情状,从而能够使诗人充分体味到“自然”本身,并把这种难言的生存状态用艺术的语言传达出来。
