1976年6月,在临汾果树场一株18年生的柳玉苹果树上,发现一个比柳玉果实着色好、成熟早的芽变枝条。1977年观察,这个枝上的苹果于5月30日就开始着色,6月10日着色就相当好了,6月13日成熟采收。1978年低接了柳玉芽变幼树12株,1980年定植,81年有一株小树中干顶部连串形成了3个腋花芽,82年春开花后座果6个,南边的4个果6月7日着色,14日着色达70％,靠北边的2个果6月9日着色,21日着色达70％,23日着色近100％。对柳玉芽变母枝及其低接幼树多年观察,均表现出色红、早熟这两个突出性状。1985年7月1日,通过有关专家鉴定,确认为柳玉
