1946年6月26日,国民党蒋介石在美国的支持下,调动30万军队围攻我中原军区5万多人的部队。为了保存实力,中原军区根据中共中央的指示,实行了分路突围。中原局、中原军区司令部所在的北路军左翼部队,在司令员李先念的率领下,经过了抢渡唐河、白河,强渡丹江,血战南化塘等战斗后,终于杀开一条血路,粉碎了蒋介石刘峙部企图于荆紫关以南全歼我北路军主力的阴谋,得以继续西进。7月21日,部队到达陕南商南县梁家坟南侧的椴树桠时,又突然遭到国民党胡宗南部整编第九十师第六十一旅的阻击。
