A dedicated data communications network using VSATs has been implemented in recent years. These networks provide a reliable, cost-effective way to address the need for transactional data communications. For a larger market, the adaptability and viability of VSAT requires further reductions in the cost of the provided VSATs. The most expensive part of the VSBT system is the microwave subsystem. Recently, a large number of monolithic microwave integrated circuit (MMIC) devices used in VSAT microwave subsystems have been developed and the design methodology in developing MMIC devices can still be referred to as a cost reduction method for general purpose microwave subsystems. This paper presents a different perspective for implementing a VSAT with such a microwave subsystem that uses new digital modulation and demodulation methods and the unique performance of dedicated digital modulation. The MMIC implementation of these circuits can result in a further reduction in the cost of future VSATs.
