Researchers at the National Oak Ridge Institute in Tennessee have developed a method of extracting aluminum and other useful metals from coal ash. This method not only recycles useful metals from the waste, but also helps the utilities to dispose of the coal ash according to environmental requirements. The National Oak Ridge Institute is the first disposal that can compete with mining bauxite. Each year coal-fired power plants in the United States generate more than 60 million tons of coal ash waste. Each ton of waste contains more than 300 pounds of alumina and 150 pounds of iron. The recovery of aluminum and other metals from soot not only reduces the amount of waste that must be disposed of but also minimizes processing costs (currently $ 15-20 / tonne).
