格尔木以东10km的青藏线上,约有300m长的路堤是用绵沙填筑的。经过十多年的使用,道路未出现形变。路基、路面、涵洞仍然完好。这段路基是1975年修筑的。路堤长388m,填方高度高达2m,用绵沙(细沙、粉沙,中粗沙的混合物)填筑。沿线1～2百公里的筑路材料都是绵沙。格尔木地区干旱少雨,平均年降雨量40mm,年蒸发量平均大于2800mm,为降雨量的70倍以上。绵沙既透水,又无塑性,
