In Summitville, gold mining is associated with minerals that generate acidic wastewater. How is this close relationship going? One way to answer this question is to study modern volcanoes similar to ancient volcanoes in Summitville. For example, the unmodified rocks in Summitville are very much like the rocks in Mount St. Helens, Washington. In 1980, Mount St.Helens volcanic eruption, followed by the occurrence of top crater lava mound growth. This lava mound shows that it is a surface eruption of a very viscous (thick, sticky) magma that slowly increases in the volcano. During and after the formation of the basal lava mound of Mount St. Helens, a large amount of acid gas and water vapor were ejected from the top of the volcano due to the cooling of the magma inside the volcano.
