Randolph Quirk’s presentation in Today’s English 1990 21 raised many serious questions. In Today’s English 1991 issue of 23, Braj Kachru addresses these issues from a historical and theoretical point of view. Several others later elaborated on various issues raised by the two copywriters. Here I want to explore the implications of Quirk’s point of view from the perspective of teachers involved in language classes and facing the task of teaching language. Krachru touches on the realities of these education, but in some aspects it seems worthwhile to make a comment from a practicing teacher. My first talk seems to be two issues that Quirk is most concerned about: the characteristics of the native speaker and his low profile (at Quirk’s words, “half-bottle vinegar”) found in at least some of the practicing teachers. Finally look
