抗美援朝第一次战役中,敌人负隅顽抗、拒不缴枪的占多数,被生俘者很少为此,志愿军政治部极有针对性地开展了正确对待战俘和开展瓦解敌军的工作经致电请示中央军委和毛泽东主席后,首次释放了上百名美、李伪俘虏,扩大了我军优待政策的影响,打破了敌军的怕杀心理夜幕降临,几辆载着美军和南朝鲜军103名战俘的卡车,躲过美军飞机的轰炸,开到了两军前沿阵地。当我方人员向战俘们交待了通过美军警戒线的方法,同时告知,万一不能通过,仍可回来时,战俘们感动得与我方人员拥抱。志愿军首释战俘一事,在国际舆论界很快就引起了强烈反响志愿军首释战俘后,第二次战役中就两次出现了美军百人以上集体向我投降的局面。战俘释放后对我军俘虏政策的宣传,也引起了美国军事当局的极大恐慌,他们连忙封锁消息,隔离战俘,并加强对战俘的监视活动。而中国人民志愿军对待俘虏极其人道的仁义之举,赢得了全世界爱好和平人士的广泛赞誉。
