中国很早就编辑印行过《四库全书》等相当于今天百科辞典之类的大型类书,然而,新中国成立以来类似百科辞典一类的书籍却一直未见出版.直到1978年,才开始计划组编一套约80卷的大型百科全书.全书设想先分学科的,一卷乃至数卷地陆续出版,准备化10年时间出齐.1986年出版的《考古学》分册即是其中的一卷.新中国成立以来,中国的考古学取得了辉煌成就,但与此不相适应的是,至今连一本自己的《考古学辞典》也没有.学科辞典的出版反映了该学科所达到的水平,而辞典
