江苏省无锡市连元街小学初名埃实学堂,清光绪二十四年(1898)杨模集民资创办并任监院总理(校长),聘请数学家华蘅芳为总教习,开中国新教育风气之先声。办学卓有成效,尤以国文成绩最优。清光绪二十八年(1902)9月,皇帝降旨嘉奖,赐“乐育英才”匾额。江苏省视学历次莅临视察,均得较高评语,以为“管理甚合法度”“成绩卓越”“课堂规则一律整肃”“成绩斐然可观”。民国时期,学校大师荟萃,桃李天下,著名文学家钱基博、国学大师钱穆等名师担纲教学,著名科学家顾毓琇、经济学家孙冶方等国家级专家在此求学。
