Researchers at the University of California, Berkeley, are conducting self-powered exoskeletons funded by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency. Possible features include getting a soldier out to carry heavier items such as weapons, other equipment, and injured colleagues than muscular strength alone. The Berkeley BLEEX includes a pair of mechanical metal leg brackets rigidly attached to the user’s foot and relatively loosely connected elsewhere. The entire system includes a power unit that uses an engine to hydraulically provide movement
