胡元倓于1903年创办的明德学堂,是清末湖南第一所私立学校。它经历了几十个不平凡的春秋,直至胡谢世后,明德依然长在。胡的一生与明德相始终,其办校时间之长、规模之大、教学质量之高、社会影响之深远,为中国近代教育史所罕见。明德学堂曾是以黄兴为首的华兴会从事革命运动的据点,同时也有封建顽固势力在这里活动。胡以一介书生,蔽屣名利、往来于新、旧势力之间,一方面利用官、绅权势以维持明德学堂;一方面又利用明德学堂以掩护黄兴等革命党人的活动,从而为教育事业、为当时的革命作出了积极的贡献。研讨胡元恢及其所创办的明德学堂,不仅对研究中国近代教育史,而且对研究辛亥革命史,乃至整个民主革命史都是有益的。
Hu Yuan 创 was founded in 1903, the Mingde School, Hunan is the first private school in late Qing Dynasty. Studying Hu Yuan-hui and the Mingde School founded by him not only helps us to study the history of modern China’s education, but also studies the history of the Revolution of 1911 and even the history of democratic revolution as a whole.
