Over the past decade, there has been a dramatic increase in the volume of data compiled in the industrial, military and scientific databases, leading to the development of new technologies that economically transmit information locally and at high data rates. Among these technologies, the most important are serial asynchronous multi-terminal time division multiplexed data buses. This article discusses a 100Mb / s optical fiber data bus system with up to 2km spacing connected to 16 terminals. The system was developed as part of the NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration) database management system for archiving and retrieving satellite data. After a brief introduction to NASA’s application, it discusses the structure of a high-speed data bus, bus access protocols, system implementation, and error rate characteristics.
