Historical Review of Major Natural Disasters Over the past hundred years, various natural disasters such as floods, typhoons, droughts and earthquakes have been coming to the earth. The economic losses caused by the disaster soared from 38 billion U.S. dollars in the 1950s to more than 530 billion U.S. dollars in the 1990s. In 1999 alone, 702 major natural disasters such as earthquakes and typhoons hit the world, surpassing the 700 highest post-war record set in 1998, with all kinds of natural disasters causing a total of 70,000 casualties and an economic burden of 80 billion U.S. dollars loss.
