赤门,是苏州古八门之外的城门。因为如此,所以至今人们不能说清它的始建年代,又因为它早就关闭,所以连它的确切位置也不能肯定。《吴郡图经续记》、《吴郡志》、新编《苏州市志》皆祖唐陆广微《吴地记》之说:赤门在匠门南三里。匠门即今相门。又云:门向朝南故日赤。虽然这种说法几成为定论,但它与史实却是不相符的。赤者,红也,在五行中属火指南方。由此我们肯定:赤门在南方,与东面的匠门无关。这个结论与卢熊《苏州府志》“赤门,正南门也”的记
