1946年秋,我考上清华大学中文系三年级做插班生。有一天在系主任办公室,朱佩弦先生郑重地指着一位文弱瘦小的戴眼镜的老师,对我说:“这位是浦江清先生。”看上去朱先生对浦先生是非常尊重的。我向浦先生行过礼,朱先生对浦先生说:“他是新考来的三年级插班生,是俞平伯先生的学生。”随后我办完事即离去,没有多同两位先生盘桓。我在清华的一年里,没有选浦先生的课,因此直到1952年院系调整三校合并,我才又见到江清先生。真正同浦先生有密切接触是从1954年开始的。当时我不再教公共基础课,调到文学史教研室,分配给浦先生当助手。浦先生担任宋元明清文学史这一教学小组的负责人,只有我一个“兵”。按
