工业磷酸三钠的主要用途是水处理药剂。动力锅炉(汽包炉)炉内添加磷酸三钠对炉水进行校正处理,是目前防止锅炉结垢的重要技术措施。水溶性钙盐是锅炉的主要结垢物质,它与磷酸三钠相遇一般情况下生成Ca_3(PO_4)2,它本身就是一种坚硬的水垢。但在高温高压的炉内且在适宜的碱性条件(pH=9~11)下,将按下式反应: 5Ca~(2+)+3PO_4~(3-)+OH~→Ca_5(OH)(PO_4)_3产物亦可写成[3Ca_3(PO_4)_2·Ca(OH)_2],叫做碱性磷灰石,它是一种松软的水渣,易随锅炉排污除去,故不致于造成结垢。工业磷酸三钠的质量检验,在化工部标准《HGl-322~78》中有明确规定。测试方法采用磷钼酸喹啉重量法,它比原标准《HGl-322-66》采用磷酸铵镁重量
