The strategic priority area for global change research has been identified by a dedicated global change committee. The Commission was established in accordance with the International Geosphere and Biosphere Planning (IGBP), which is implemented by the Joint Council of International Scientific Societies and now has 46 members. The Global Change Council has now identified five priority areas: global atmospheric chemistry, ocean currents, biosphere problems in the hydrological cycle, terrestrial ecosystems and global changes in almost two millennia.
