INTRODUCTION In underwater acoustic research using explosion sound sources, it is sometimes necessary to use directional receiver units for the purpose of noise immunity and / or bearing information. This report addresses the design and implementation of broadband hydrophone arrays with such applications. However, since much of the discussion in this report is general, it can be applied to any wideband array of acoustics, seismology and electromagnetics. The required performance specifications can be roughly described as follows: (1) The array should have a “good” directivity over the entire operating band. Beam width and maximum sidelobe level will be excellent as a base
