Japan’s “Economist” magazine once pointed out in an article analyzing Japan’s current position in the world market: Japan has returned to the stage of the battle for capitalist world markets; all countries are “surprised and bewildered. Eyesight is watching and seriously considering “countermeasures.” Pre-war Japan accounted for the seventh place in the world output, followed by Britain, France, the United States, Germany, Canada and India. As a result of the Second World War, Japan was defeated, which severely weakened its competitive position. Its export value dropped to a negligible level, falling from the seventh pre-war to 35th in 1947. However, this situation in Japan is temporary. Since 1951, Japan has re-entered the capitalist world market with new competitors. In the past 12 years or so, Japan’s foreign trade has developed even more rapidly. Last year, the world’s total exports increased by only 8.3%, while Japan’s exports have increased by 23% in terms of total value of goods and the number of commodities.
