随着20世纪90年代后期计算机的普及,全国各高校图书馆纷纷建立起电子阅览室。经过了几年的辉煌,电子阅览室的发展都遭遇到了不同的瓶颈困扰。归纳起来原因有以下几点:学生宿舍普遍安装了校园网,教学等公共场所大都安设了无线网络;拥有笔记本电脑等移动设备的同学比例大大增加,特别是智能手机的普及;加之微媒体的迅猛发展,近几年兴起来的开放共享的MOOC,学生们在图书馆外即可轻松获取电子资源。这些原因都使读者改变了以前的阅读及接受信息的方式,这也不同程度的消弱了高校图书馆电子阅览室甚至图书馆的某些功能。
