After the World War II, great progress has been made in light-induced fisheries. Among them, the rapid development and large-scale development in the countries such as the Soviet Union, Japan and the Philippines have drawn the universal attention of the world’s fishing industry. The development of light-trap fishing technology is of great economic importance for the capture of some pelagic fish, transforming it from a secondary fishery to a major fishery. Examples are the sprats fishery in the Caspian Sea in the Soviet Union, saury fishing in Japan, and sardine fisheries in countries such as the Philippines. According to the 1963 Soviet version of “Light Trapping and Fishing,” about 25% of Japan’s marine catches are captured by light-induced fisheries.
