明代隐士洪应明在《菜根谭》中云:“耳目见闻为外贼,情欲意识为内贼。只是主人翁惺惺不昧,独坐中堂,贼便化为家人矣！”这段话的意思是,人的眼睛都喜欢看美色,耳朵喜欢听美音,所有这些声色都是属于外来的敌人;每个人都有容易冲动的感情,都有无法满足的欲望,所有这些心理上的邪念都是内在的敌人。然而,不管是“内贼”还是“外贼”,只要身为主人翁的你自己保持灵魂的清醒,所做之事不违背情理法则,心理上的敌人就会变成修养品德的助手。我以为这段言论,对于我们加强思想品德修养,很有借鉴意义。

However, whether you are an “inner thief” or an “outer thief”, as long as you, being your own masters, keep your soul awake and do not violate the rules of reason, your psychological enemy will become an aide to your moral character. I think this remark is of great reference to strengthening our ideological and moral accomplishments.
