Human vaginal mucosa and oral mucosa have similar histological features, the role of water barrier is also basically similar. However, their ability to penetrate the drug is the same, and the vaginal mucosa as a suitable experimental model of drug permeability studies have not yet cleared. To this end, the authors investigated the ability of these two tissues to penetrate 17β-estradiol. The authors selected six healthy vaginal mucosa specimens and six buccal mucosa specimens to assess the ability of 17β-estradiol to penetrate both tissues through a diffusion system using flow rates. The results showed that the flow rate of 17β-estradiol through the human buccal mucosa was slightly higher than the flow through the cervical mucosa (about 15%), but the difference was not significant.
