呼兰区位于黑龙江省南部,地处126°11′E～127°19′E,45°49′N～46°25′N之间,属于我国北方高寒地区,全年无霜期较短,仅为140d左右。玉米是我区的主栽粮食作物,年播种面积15万hm2左右,占总耕地面积的70%以上。与我国南方地区相比,我区玉米全年仅为一季生产,春季播种正是玉米全年栽培最为关键的阶段,如遇多日持续降雨发生春涝将影响正常播种,播种机械无法进地,导致播期拖后,对玉米生产大为不利。
