In this paper, two sub-components of normal human very-low density lipoprotein (VLDL), namely, VLDL depleted in apolipoprotein E and VLDL enriched in apolipoprotein E, were used to treat mouse peritoneal macrophage (MPM) Effect of lipid accumulation. After incubation of apolipoprotein E-deficient VLDL and Apolipoprotein A-enriched VLDL with MPM for 24 h, triglyceride (TG) and cholesterylester (CE) increased with the increase of VLDL concentration (ANOVA, P <0.05), and the increase of TG in MPM was mostly in VLDL with apolipoprotein E deficiency (P <0.01), but not with the increase of CE in MPM Sex differences (P> 0.05). This suggests that both apolipoprotein E-deficient VLDL and apolipoprotein E-rich VLDL can promote accumulation of TG and CE in MPM, thereby converting macrophage (MP) cells into foam cells.
