Collection could be a very fascinating pastime. If you want to do a survey on urban residents’ opinion on private collections, you’d better go to Shanghai because statistics show that people in Shanghai really enjoy collecting items of cultural heritage and historic interest. That probably explains why Shanghai boasts over 70 family museums, accounting for over 50% of the total in China.According to Mr. Wu Shaohua, president of Shanghai Collection & Appreciation Association, there are about 300,000 Shanghai residents keen on collecting things as a hobby. Valuable items targeted by these private hobbyists count more than 200. The following are brief accounts of four individual collectors and their treasures.
