通过研究地质历史时期地磁场的变化与地幔对流、地幔柱的活动、全球热流变化、真极移、气候演化、火山链、大陆玄武岩、海洋磁异常以及生物灭绝等现象的相互关系,可以了解地球内部的物理过程及演化史。当然,地球磁场变化与这些现象之间可能会存在着某种滞后效应,这是有待于进一步加以研究的问题。地球外核的流体运动产生磁场,同时,核幔之间的耦合影响着外核流体运动与D″层的物理和化学状态。进而影响着地核发电机的状态与能量供给,导致地球磁场的变化。同时从D″层产生的地幔柱影响着地幔对流,地幔对流的改变又影响着板块运动。对这些问题的研究是认识地球的关键。
